Xbox One Problem: Error 0x80bd003c setting capture location to external NTFS hdd

Solution to Xbox One 0x80bd003c format hdd to NTFS

Xbox One allow user to capture gameplay to an external NTFS formatted hard disk drive. I am currently using a Xbox One S and has a spare hdd lying around so why not give it try. As per requirement i format the hard disk to NTFS format with a pc. Happily I plug in the USB-3(It must be USB-3) hdd and ready to record my first gameplay. But it keeps telling me that my drive is not formatted to NTFS. I repeatedly format the hdd with the standard and the quick format method. Nothing works...

To capture game clip and screenshots externally, storage must be formatted as NTFS. Connect it to your PC and format it then reconnect it to your Xbox

Search the internet and still not getting anywhere; until i saw a youtube video (links below) talking about cables. The hosts were talking about external harddisk not having the format option and they are not able to transfer games. They solved the problem just by changing the cables.

I am using a USB-3 Maxtor M3 1TB hdd for the capture. On first inspection of the cable , it looks pretty solid and of good quality. But when compared to my other USB-3 Sony hdd, the Maxtor cable width is actually much smaller. I switch the cable and it works.

I use the usb 3 cable from the Sony hdd on the maxtor and connect it to the xbox

If this doesn't works for you, perhaps you can try to find or borrow more cables. There could be some other problems. At least it works for me now.And by the way once xbox recognise your drive as a NTFS drive, you can return or swap back the cables.

Once you see this message that means Xbox already recognise your hdd NTFS and allows you to set capture to external drive
Once you see this message, that means you can go ahead and set capture to external drive. I had already swap back the original maxtor cable and it still works

Points to Note:
- Do not format the hdd using the xbox as it will only works with games and apps.
- Select the "use for media" option if prompt
 - Use only USB-3 external device

Hey !! It could be just the cables ...

and ... Thanks to this youtube video
